Lisanne asked about my greeting card organizer that I mentioned a few posts back. I LOVE this thing. I pick up cards when I see one I like so I needed a place to store them. I found this one at S@m’s. It came with 30 or 40 cards, and they are good cards too, with embellishments. I’ve found similar organizers at T@rget and will pick one up when I see a good deal. They usually work out to be under 50 cents a card. It’s nice to have different cards on hand like baby, sympathy, get well, etc. since those things can come up quickly and I might not have time to get to the store. I also think these organizers make great gifts for busy people. I’m on the lookout for a couple for Christmas gifts.

Jon and I went out for date night last night. We were going to have Mexican at our favorite Mexican joint by the mall but decided at the last minute that we’d go to Olive G@rden. It was the lure of the breadstick. Now I’m not usually a complainer. But you’ll see why I had to recount this experience. So we got in there and realized our mistake almost immediately. It was only 5:30 yet we still had to wait like 10 minutes (which isn’t long, but there were lots of workers standing around and they told us there was no wait. Then they spent all this time setting up a party of 7 who came in after us.) We were seated and told that Pam (not her real name) would be our server. She finally came to see us 10 minutes later. By then we still didn’t know what we wanted to order because nothing was jumping out at us but we buckled down. I ordered their peach tea- YUMMY, and the steak calabrese. Jon ordered a chicken alfredo pizza.
It started to get more and more busy. We had lots to talk about. But I could not look away from the frightening sight at the next table. A hairy man in a loosy goosy tank top that exposed his pits, the side of his man boobs, his love handles, and much of his back that sported a natural hair sweater. UGH. And he was out with his wife and son who were nicely dressed. The dad was also wearing jean shorts. I abhor jean shorts. But the entire ensemble should have just been burned in the pizza oven. Why that wife let him out of the house like that was beyond me. And this has nothing to do with him being hairy. He can’t help that. I get it. But hey, try a shirt with sleeves!
When did it become acceptable to go to a restaurant dressed that way? Wanna go to a fast food joint in your man tank? Go ahead. But if I’m paying more than $10 an entree I shouldn’t have to sheild my eyes for fear of a hairy nipple glimpse. And wives!! This is just as much your fault. Men don’t have fashion sense so you have to help them. Jon knows he must wear at least a tucked in polo shirt if we’re going to sit down to eat in any type of restaurant. I don’t have to tell him that. If your man doesn’t know then tell him. Or make up a flow chart or something. And why is it that these things seem to happen more at the chain restaurants? We try to avoid chains but like I said, it was the lure of the breadstick.
I think we’ll stick to our standard Mexi place next time. Although I do have to give props to the door guy. He was super friendly and fun.
After dinner we saw Ratatouille and it was way too cute! And we weren’t the only couple there without kids. Yay! Plus we found out that if you see a movie at our AMC theatre Mon-Thur it’s only $6 any time! Woohoo! More movie dates for us! -
I forgot to show y’all something. My sister Morgan,17, painted the coolest painting for Ling Ling’s room a little while back. It was a school assignment so it had to stay at school for a while but I finally have it now. Now I need to find a frame so it can hang in LL’s nursery. I just love it. Click to enlarge.

So here are the pics of the birthday things I forgot to take the other day. And by the way, thank you very much for all the fun birthday wishes! It was a really good one this year. Full of laughter and surrounded by loved ones. Now, on to the pics:
This is the little screen bug:
These are the gorgeous dishes Shannon gave me:
This is the metal wall art thingy that will hang over the front door:
My sister Sara gave me these pretty daisies:

My actual birthday was low key until the evening, which was a good thing. I still tend to get tired since my surgery (we’re at the 4 week post op point now so it’s expected still) and I didn’t want to gogogo all day then be drained for Saturday. So CSP & I just kind of hung out at the house and played with the pugs. Then we hopped in the truck and headed out to his parents’ house. MIL & FIL had prepared a lovely dinner and a yummy cake.
Jon kept asking me all day if I felt any older yet. So far, no. And I don’t think I look too old yet either.
Now compare me now to my 20 yr old self and I might cry, but so far I’m still digging the whole getting older thing. Just means becoming more comfortable with who you are and setting things in motion that will affect you for the rest of your life. Like kids (adoption update coming soon) and stuff. But enough serious business. Let’s talk presents!
They gave me some scented tea lights, a cute napkin holder, a lovely tea pot from a company that has special meaning to my family (I collect tea pots), and this pair of Crocs. Not too sure about the Crocs yet. A bit on the busy side. But I’ll be sure to wear them when we visit the MIL & FIL. Oh, and almost forgot, they also gave me the cutest little bee pillow for Ling Ling’s room. Love it.
We ended up staying way late while they oohed and aahed over my new camera. We didn’t get to bed til after 1 am.
But that didn’t stop us from getting up relatively early on Saturday. After breakfast at home we went to the Dollar Store to get some party platters, bowls, and tortilla warmers. Then we did some partay grocery shopping at Bloom. We went home and I browned some ground beef then put it in a crock pot to keep warm. Then I made close to 50 Tex Mex Mini Chicken Cups. They are my favorite party food hands down. So easy to make. I’m so mad I didn’t get a picture of them at the party. But I’ll make them again and post the recipe. Mustachio & Candice both wanted the recipe so I have to type it out anyway. They look something like this. When I finished cooking I got all gorgeous while Jon packed up all our party fixins & games and we headed next door.
Maggie (almost 3) came running downstairs “Miss Shannon! Miss Shannon! We’re having a birthday party for you!”
I know Sweetie, thank you.
Your hair looks beautiful. And you like my dress? I’m a princess just like you today!
Now that’s the way to get the birthday girl in a fabulous party mode!Jon and I set up the kitchen. We had a veggie tray, fruit tray, tortilla chips, a taco bar (that’s what the ground beef was for) and the chicken cups plus toppings and sodas all set up and ready to go. Candice had decorated her house so cute in a fiesta theme and had a big bucket of margaritas chillin. Papa & Gigi & Momo came bearing cream puffs and my big birthday cookie (I’m not a cake fan). Shannon & Mustachio came and all the girls swirled around squealing over her gorgeous
engagement ring. Sara, Jake, & Joey rounded out the rest of our group.
We feasted on Mexican food
then gathered in the family room to open presents. Shannon & Mustachio game me the most gorgeous set of dishes. Square sparkly plates with a lovely combo of sage green and chocolate. Plus matching tumblers. Can’t find the pics online so I’ll take some and post later.
Momo gave me a new game called Apples to Apples. Papa & Gigi gave me a stained glass screen bug lady bug. So cute! I’d never seen anything like that before. Again, I should have taken a pic of it before starting this post but I wasn’t thinking. I did find some similar screen bugs here. They also gave me this awesome metal wall decoration thing that will hang above our front door once we get the entry painted. Again I forgot to take a picture. After presents it was time to play our first game of the evening: Scene It. We had a big time. There was much shouting and high fiving, but alas, my team lost. After the game the kids were put to bed, Sara & my nephews headed home and so did Mustachio and Shannon.
The remaining peeps: Papa, Gigi, Momo, CSP, Devin, Candice, and I gathered round the kitchen table and played Apples to Apples then Cranium. Cranium is my all time favorite game ever because you get to see your friends & family do all sorts of stuff like charades and draw and sculpt and hum. I can’t hum to save my life and there’s usually a need on the part of my family to try and remedy that, to no avail. We had so much fun playing and I laughed harder than I’d laughed in a really long time. By the time we cleaned up and said goodbyes it was after 1 am! Whew!
Photos are here.

My morning started with a serenade from my sister, BIL & Nephews. Too cute! They called at 7:40 AM (!!!) and sang into the machine. Sang Happy Birthday. Cause the entire family thought it was the 3rd today. Doh! It was sweet though and I’ll be sure to save the recording so I can hear the boys’ sweet little voices.
CSP & I ran his truck, Q-Tip (cause CSP thinks he’s all gansta in his white truck), down to Carm@x for an oil change & for them to check out the steering (it had been squeaking). Then we kept heading south down to (click all photos to enlarge) Shealy’s for some Birthday Bar B Que!
I took my camera to take some pics of our favorite sights on the way. Like this house:
And the mail “shak”:
This sign:
. CSP let me nap a bit on the way down
since we were up late last night. He went out for a beer with my BIL and didn’t get home til laaate. But I woke up as we pulled off the highway and on to local roads.
I’ve been going to Shealy’s since I was a little girl. It’s right down the road from where I grew up, just outside of Columbia, SC. I first took CSP there about 5 years ago and he’s been a fan ever since. I swear I think he ate an entire chicken today. He wouldn’t let me take pics inside the restaurant cause it was crowded and he’s a DL kind of guy. The tables are set up in looooong rows so you sit with strangers if it gets crowded. Not the enviroment in which he likes for me to whip out my camera.
We left with full stomachs and Jon napped most of the way back to town. We stopped in to T@rget to pick me up a proper camera bag (the tote I was carrying my camera in just wasn’t cutting it anymore). While there he walked up as I was looking at some pug greeting cards.Aren’t these pug cards cute?
Yeah. You want one?
No. I’ve got plenty of birthday cards at home in my organizer for this month’s birthdays.
No, I mean, would you like a birthday card? For your birthday? You have got to be freakin kidding me?!? I couldn’t believe it was birthday eve and he still hadn’t gotten a card!
When have I had time?
Oh, I don’t know, the last 364 days??
Well I got you a camera! And I took care of you when you were sick.
Punk.Once we were back in the car I wondered aloud if my father would remember my birthday and send a card (doubtful). I said I figured he’d call instead.
Can I just call you too? Or hey, I can send you an email!
PUNK!!!He’s lucky we were almost back at C@rmax or he’d have been in for a beating. I dropped him off then headed toward home while he went in to work for an hour or so (even though he’s on vacation). Ugh. Sara called and wanted me to swing by her new house to check out her backsplash in progress. It looks great. While there I used their restroom. They don’t have interior doorknobs as the house is being remodeled and the doorknobs are in the process of being replaced. While taking care of business I noticed little fingers and a big blue eye peering at me through the doorknob hole. I said “Jacob! What if I was going poo? You get out of here!” He giggled and ran off. Then a moment later he burst in and looked at me all serious and said “Aunt Shanny, you better turn the fan on just in case it gets stinky in here.” Bah! The things that come out of that 4 year old’s mouth!
Well I’m off to bed. We’ve got a busy day tomorrow and a busier one on Saturday. And you know how it is when you get old, you start to move slower and complain more. 34, here I come.

This morning I went to my hair girls’ house and got my hair did. I was loooong over due and looking ratty. Now I’m all fabulous again. So I came home and took a nap then CSP & I went to get some Mexican for dinner. All was going pretty well (except they put that “salad” crap on my plate against my clearly explained wishes and hot lettuce mingled with my pollo fundido so there was lots of plate scraping to get that crap off of my plate and onto CSP’s). Ahem, sorry. As we were leaving I started to slide out of the booth when the leg of my capri pants caught on something. I reached down thinking maybe it was a nick in the wood or something, but no. It was GUM! YUCK! I swear to you if I ever catch my kid sticking gum under a table or on a booth so help me he/she will be scraping gum off tables for weeks! We told the manager and stuck napkins to my pants so the gum wouldn’t transfer to the seat of the truck. Ugh.
Then we went to Brusters for my free birthday ice cream. Yum.
So if anyone knows how to get gum out of cute brown capris please let me know. I googled it and there are approx. 9876986343487 remedies on the internets and I just don’t know which one to go with. The gum is blue if that helps. -
So I’ve been watching this show on BBC America that I just love called How Clean is Your House? Kim & Aggie give great tips on cleaning during the show and we’ve tried a few out. They’re all about “cheap & cheerful” and using products you’d have right in your home, like salt & lemon juice. You have to get used to the British lingo of course, but that’s a bit easier for me than CSP since I grew up with my Irish Nanny. I’m used to her saying AL-you-min-ee-um foil instead of aluminum foil.
Anyway, I thought I’d share a tip with you that I just love. I wear mostly silver jewelry and it can get tarnished. Some of it, like my heart bracelet, can be hard to clean with all its nooks and crannies. So the HCIYH ladies said to get tarnish off of silver the easy way to do this:
Line a plastic bowl or dish (like Tupperware) with aluminum foil. Place your jewelry inside the dish. Lay it out so it touches the foil. Only do this with sterling. No plated stuff. Then sprinkle a good bit of baking soda on it. They call it bicarbonate of soda on the show. Now pour hot water over everything. I put the kettle on and take it just under boiling then pour that on. The mixture will bubble and froth for a bit. Let it sit a while, a long while if it’s all really dirty. Then rinse your silver and dry it. All shiny!
