We had our first full day of class Saturday. There’s a LOT I can’t tell you, but there’s some that I can tell you about. Our teacher/instructor/facilitator is awesome. She’s the same lady that did our orientation. Love her.
Things I can’t tell you:
- Any case study stories.
- Anything another potential parent shares in class.
What I can tell you:
- We aren’t the only couple in the class that is adopting, there are a few couples and some single parents.
- We learned our child will be at least one year old. Most likely closer to at least 2 and up.
- During introductions quite a few people there to foster said that they were inspired to help because of the Haiti earthquake. That they felt a calling to foster children here after seeing all the Haitian children on tv. Love that.
- If you foster in NC you can’t share the reasons that child came into the foster program with anyone but your spouse.
- There are almost 2 dozen people in our class. It is so awesome to me that so many people are willing to help children out of the goodness of their hearts.
I tell ya, being a foster parent requires a HUGE heart. God bless these people. Our teacher was telling them that they need to realize they will get their hearts broken when the children leave their homes to either be adopted or be reunited with their bio families. How could you not? A child living in your home for a week, a month, a year? That’s why I can’t do it. I can’t give a child up. It would kill me.
Now, it’s not all tears and heartache in class. There’s laughter too. And role playing (my shy CSP loves that). We’re learning a lot. Oh, and there’s homework too. Lots and lots of paperwork. A little paperwork is nothing though, not when our little one is on the other end of that paper trail!
Oh, the paperwork. My god – the paperwork. You’re right, though. We do it unflinchingly because we know what awaits us. Keep us updated!

I’m so glad that your class is going well. Sorry about all of the paperwork! I can’t even imagine! You are being so organized about all this (well, you’d have to be), and it sounds like you and CSP are really working together and talking to each other about the process and being so knowledgeable about it all. So happy for you!

Yep! Every Saturday for the next 5 or 6 weeks. Our first class was snowed out & they still don’t know if we’re gonna have to go an extra week or we may be able to fit all the material in to the scheduled classes.

That’s really exciting, the time will fly by! We took our local adoption classes as well, it was like a crash course and was a great experience. You will learn things about yourself as you go along…I liked that part too.
P.S – I am still so excited for you!!!
