Living out loud in the Carolinas

So I’m trying to be more of an eco responsible girl. We recycle through our town. We use those squirelly swirly CFL light bulbs. We turn off the water while we’re brushing our teeth. I take my own bags to the store (and get some funky looks sometimes- nothing like walking into T@rget with a giant IKEA bag). We shop in bulk (it cuts down on excess packaging). I use a reusable water bottle.

Here are some good ideas I found to go green. Here’s how to conserve water. I’d love to do more. I would totally go with solar or wind power if we could afford it. I’d love to one day build a ‘green’ house. Here are a couple links to cutie shopping bags (great gift ideas!). az_b3_tn.jpgI’m going to give some of those as Christmas presents this year. Also, IKEA shopping bags are only 59 cents each and have a lifetime warranty! Go get some!

So what green things do you do? Give me some more ideas!

I don’t know if it’s on your link, and I’m not a super attentive person to green, but I heard on the news that you should fill a water bottle full and put it in your toilet tanks, that takes up more space and when you flush each time you will save that much water.

We do the same. Every little bit helps!

I mostly remain green with envy about lots of things.
Like people who get their referrals. People who are traveling the world. People who weigh 30 pounds less than me. So, I do lots of GREEN.

Seriously. I recycle, and re-use my big water jug with tap water (by the way, WAY better for you than spring water), I’ve turned off the water while brushing for YEARS- mainly because I thought it was such a waste to leave it running, hand wash most of my dishes (and leave water off while I scrub), and have yet to use my own shopping bag but should.

We recycle everything! Our town just recently started allowing plastics #1-8 to be recycled, so every recycling day we have 2 or three bags of recycling to our half-bag of garbage. Not eating at home very often cuts down on garbage I tell ya!

I would compost if I had a yard, my mom has composted since I was a kid.

We’ve also got the funky light bulbs and don’t run water excessively, etc.

I should be using reusable bags. I clicked on your links, some of those bags are like $35 for a set of 5. I guess I’m too cheap to go green! (but then I saw the other ones and they are only 5 bucks…i could do that)

I do turn off the water when I brush my teeth. I’ve been doing that since i was a kid. And I recycle like crazy. I’ve been really looking into the 7th generation brand of stuff. I think I’m going to use their diapers. They are much more biodegradeable then other brands. And supposedly are great for kids that are prone to severe diaper rash, because they don’t have any chemicals or chlorine in them. Just a thought.

You’re funny! What would YOU do in a greenhouse?!
Don’t forget, I’m your mother and I REALLY know you.
I suppose you could make CSP work in the greenhouse because I know you’d never go there. Too hot, too dirty, too smelly…….I wash dishes by hand, like Kristen, and rinse them all at once to save water. Also Momo said we have to cut 5 min off our shower time! I can’t wait to get my cute shopping bag at Christmas!!

Not green house like with plants! Green house like environmentally friendly! :P

Hubby and I bicker about this stuff all the time. I try to use a washcloth instead of paper towels when I wipe down the kitchen counters and I have assembled a collection of give-away tote bags to take to Target with us when we go grocery shopping. But it’s always a fight to turn off lights and stop using too much detergent in the dishwasher and washing machine. I waffle on and on about the environment and the bottom line … but it falls on deaf ears. Oh well, I do try.

we recycyle… have the funky light bulbs in almost every light source now… use cold water to wash everything… I have 2 of those ikea bags… but I can’t lift them once they are full of groceries to get them into the car lol… so I need smaller bags… we also use the library a lot… we have an energy eff. fridge with water filter on the inside of the door (save a lot of money on electritiy that way) and all the windows are energy eff also..

We eat out a lot. Why use energy at home when the reataurants are already using it??? Plus, I don’t like to cook.

I think I’m pretty green, but I know there is always more that I could do to help out the environment. Here’s my list:

-recycle (luckily our county takes in a lot of different materials.
-bring our own bags to the store when possible (Whole Foods has bags for $1, but look out for days when they give them out for free…you get 5 cents off your bill for each bag you bring back to use).
-use public transportation as much as possible (easy for big city dwellers, not so easy for others).
-use 7th Generation laundry soap and bathroom cleaners.
-use rechargable batteries for cameras, MP3 players, etc.
-try to buy organic and sustainable foods as much as possible.
-use an on-sink water filter instead of bottled water and try to keep 20 oz plastic bottle use to a minimum.

What a cute shopping bag. We don’t do as much as we should. We switched over all of our lightbulbs, try to conserve water, eat about half organic, and sold our SUV, but that’s about it. We should do more really.
