Bless Your Heart

Living out loud in the Carolinas

Saturday Jon and I spent the day with a dozen or so other adoptive couples in a workshop. We learned so, so much. We both agreed that every adoptive parent should attend this workshop. They covered everything from attachment to orphanage conditions, to what to expect when you’re in-country, to what to expect when you get home with your child. We walked out of there dazed and a little afraid. Asking ourselves those questions like “are we cut out to be parents?” “can we handle this?”. We also walked out of there more motivated and energized about this adoption than we have been in a while. They gave us a list of great websites and books as resources that I will post here tomorrow. My binder is in my car and Jon took my car to work tonight.
We’ve got a lot of reading to do.

I am not sure which agency you are with (so which orphanage your child will be from), but I just got back from visiting my new son and his orphanage is really very nice and the caregivers were really interactive and loving. All of the kids I saw and held were very loving. All of the worse case scenarios I imagined after my workshop were no where to be found at the Specialized Children’s home in Bishkek. Welcome to our little Kyrgyzstan Adoption Community!
