I thought I would share with y’all the latest batch of ridiculous things people have said to us about our adoption.
–“Don’t get me wrong, I want you to have children, I just want you to be smart about it.” Well thank goodness you warned us. We were about to go do something stupid without thinking. Like do a boatload of research and an invest years and all our money so we could be parents.
–“That’s exciting that you’re adopting, especially since you’re not going to have your own children.” Yeah, we’re looking into rentals.
–“Well at least now you might end up with a white kid.” (Said upon hearing we’ve had to switch countries twice now.) Thank the Lord! We’ve only spent the last 2 years planning on parenting a child of another race, and we’ve been excited about it. We don’t care where our child comes from or what she’ll look like. Y’all know that. But hey, now we won’t have to worry about it! She might be white! We won’t have to tell her she was adopted! Gosh, think of the therapy bills when she finds out!
Ok, that’s it for now. Just needed to get that out. I realize that most dumb comments are made by people who mean well and just say the wrong thing. But those 3 jackasses went above and beyond.

I’ve got one for you– said to me by an older lady who knows a friend of mine, regarding my special needs son. “Well what did you DO when you found out he wasn’t normal? Didn’t you want a normal child?” HUH?? We accepted him as a (foster-adopt) newborn, knowing he would have some issues. This lady sounded like I should get in the return line down at DCS and exchange him for a new son! “Um, excuse me but I’d like to return the sweetest boy I’ve ever met because he’s not a genius” (??) And was IS ‘NORMAL’ anyway?? ;P

We were recently asked, “do you get to name them?” (meaning children whom you adopt). Since my dd’s first name (which we call her all the time) sounds SO Chinese (/sarcasm) we just looked at her like she was the biggest dumb-butt on the planet!
I love the “your own” comments too! We always make snide remarks about “rentals” too.
Get used to the dumb comments. Unfortunately, you will get more. Having a sense of humor about it helps (and you obviously are covered there), but sometimes you just want people to think! before they speak already.

Oh, it just gets worse after you get them home. My favorite is still the woman who asked what language Kieren spoke. She was 9-months-old at the time. DUH!!!! And then there are the idiots who think all Chinese kids look the same. When we go out with my friend Jan and her daughter, some people ask if the girls are twins. They do NOT look anything similar! Each girl is being pushed in her own stroller by her own mother. My response to “are they twins?” is “no, they are Chinese”. OY!!!

I’m trying to brace myself for all of the ‘are you babysitting today?’ comments.
People are stupid and it’s always amazing to me how they don’t censor their own stupid questions and comments.

Good Lord! People are lame.
I’ve heard comments about my niece and nephew when we’re out with my BIL and SIL (she’s phillipino (i know i butchered the spelling on that one) and he’s white. I want to strangle them.
I don’t think people realize just how much thought (and time and work and love) goes into adoption. Do they think you just decide in one day and get a child the next?

You can’t fix stupid. Which is really too bad, because the stupid people outnumber us by such a large margin. :-)

You can’t fix stupid. So true.
I’ve only received one stupid comment so far, and it was like the first day we were home when the girl I hired to work in the office for me said something about Kallie’s ‘real mother’. I just looked at her and said ‘I am her real mother’. And in my head I’m thinking, ‘What am I – plastic??’
My husband’s grandmother (in her 80’s) asked if Kallie cried in English or Chinese. That one cracked me up; I still don’t know if she was joking or serious…I kind of think she was serious.
