Recently I was talking with Lisa and somehow we got on the subject of mermaids. I’ve always wanted to be a mermaid. Still wouldn’t mind it really, as long as there’s no fishy smell. When I was little my sister and I would mermaid swim in the pool. We’d practice our synchronized swimming routine that we’d do for the sailors when the ship would pull into the lagoon. We really thought the whole thing out. Sara has red hair and I’m a blonde and in our heads we were knockouts as adult, big breasted mermaids with glittery tails and long flowing hair and shimmering skin that never needed sunscreen.
The other two things I’ve always wanted to be, and would still totally sign up for if possible, are genie (like in a bottle baby) and pirate. I always loved the bottle Jeannie had on tv. All those pillows and flowy fabrics. And I love the whole Arabian Nights theme for decorating. And of course her outfit was so cool. Plus, how neat would it be to fly, be invisible, shrink all tiny when you needed to, nod your head and your house is clean and dinner’s ready. Whew.
Now, the pirate thing. I’d have to be a rich pirate with a nice bathroom on board. None of this not bathing for weeks. Plus, I need good teeth. Again I love the clothes involved- all flouncy skirts and sashes and big jewelry. I’m a huge fan of travel and I promise I wouldn’t kill people. I wouldn’t be a rape and pillage kind of pirate. Just cruise around drinking rum and exploring the world. I wonder if pugs get seasick?
So…I know I can’t be the only one. What have you always wanted to be?

I have always wanted to be a circus performer…like a trapeze artist (is that what they are called?).
When I was little, I had a genie pajama set. I loved that thing all pink and flowy.

I’m loving this! I knew I wasn’t the only one! And Ani, being Laura Ingalls Wilder is so not nutty. I loved her. And I was so in love with Albert. I wanted to be Mary so badly, until she went blind and married old Alfonso, then I decided I’d be Nelly, but be nice to people. Nelly always had the nice dresses.

This was completely non-sexual (I swear!), but as a little kid I wanted so bad to be one of the girls that partied with Ponch and Jon from the TV show “CHiPs.” They were always disco’ing or rollerskating and as a kid I thought it all looked like so much fun when those two guys rolled into town when they were off-duty. I would even practice fake-laughy freeze frames poses they had at the end of each show. I think I’ve fully embarrased myself now…

I wanted to be a mermaid too. We used to put petals from the hydrenea bush on our legs and pretend they were scales.
