Bless Your Heart

Living out loud in the Carolinas

Since I seemed to have stirred the pot a little yesterday, I thought I’d go ahead and ask a few questions. I have been wondering about these things for a while. Now, I’m just asking, there’s no judgement here. I really just want to know. So please, if you have an answer, I’d love to hear it!

-Do people like eating at Applebee’s? We have one 4 miles from the house and the parking lot is never full and it never crosses our minds to eat there. They seem to advertise a lot and that makes me wonder if maybe they are in trouble?

-Why do people smoke? I know it’s an addiction, but there are ways to quit. And it’s proven that it will kill you. I tried one once, and it just burned and smelled bad. So it really perplexes me why someone would want fire so close to their face!

-Why do people drink to get drunk after college? I understand why people drink, but some still want to drink only to get wasted. I’ve been wasted, I’ve thrown up, I’ve had the hangovers. And non of that is fun. So what up?

-Why wouldn’t people want to see the world? I understand being a bit wary with the current political tensions and all, but I want to go everywhere. And see everything. And some people don’t. They are happy to just stay in one place forever. Not that there’s anything wrong with that, but why?

-How can someone like me learn to like oysters and other slimy seafoods? I’ll try anything once, but I just can’t get past the texture. Is there some special way to cook clams or oysters and the like where I’ll actually like it?

Applebee’s – YUK I just don’t like it. My Ex Boy Mike worked at one and I ate there a few times, but they are pretty low on my list of chain type resurants with TGIFridays being at the top. I don’t care for chains or fast food much at all!

Smoking is dumb, your just gonna die from it. You know before you start it will slowly kill you so why start!

I am not a big drinker, surley would never be like “Hey Shannon lets go get trashed!” LOL I think people like the out of control feeling (I HATE IT)

Slimy oysters…YUK! Fried Clams are fabulous!

I love your questions. Do you really want answers for them from my little point of view?

I’ve eaten at Apple Bee’s at once and thought it was ok. My hubby and brother in law do not like the place!

You answered your question about smoking. It’s an addiction. And it might be a nervous habit to have something in your mouth or to play with hands. I tried it once and liked it too much so I stopped.

The drinking after college I have no idea. I am barely a social drinker. It could be a cultural thing, or an addiction or that they just don’t want to be adults?

I too want to travel everywhere. I don’t know why some do not want to travel either. My husband has this one friend who is just so narrow minded. He has no problem visiting American cities(which I like to do) but doesn’t really want to see the rest of the world. It’s sad. He doesn’t want to open his mind.

I love seafood! I would be happy to email you some recipes for you to try!!! Let me know:) Hope I helped!

    Good questions.

Applebee’s? We eat there once in a while. It’s not special… it’s the same as all those other chains out there. We always get the new waiter/waitress, too. Never fails.

People smoke because they have nothing better to do. It’s there to pass the time, and now it’s an addiction that they can’t stop doing. It’s sad, really.

Drink after college? I DRANK in college… such a party girl. I get out of college, and I’m like a dry town! hehehe

I too want to travel around the world. I want to see everything… and experience everything. Unfortunately, some people think everything they need is right here, and don’t care about anything else.

I can’t help you with the slimy seafood thing. That’s a question that can never be answered. Why anyone thought to put a clam in their mouth is beyond me!

My family love seafood, and the non slimy versions I’d say are the fried versions – they love ’em… Just dip in batter or breading and fry them I s’pose….

Shanny, because of yesterday’s post, I’m almost ready to spend $86 on a pair of sneakers. I kinda like these: http://www.zappos.com/n/p/dp/1870477/c/158.html, even if they are more than I’d like to spend.

Okay, back to today (nice to see you posting more frequently, btw).

We eat at Applebee’s maybe once a year but my skinny cousin likes it. It’s a bar, you know. That is probably what keeps them in business. Oh, and the one near us is smokey (as in cigarettes).

Did you know that the government used to give servicemen cigarettes during wartime? A lady at work who I care about very much was in Vietnam is a heavy smoker. When I told her about another lady’s husband who died recently as a result of throat (some of it was removed) and prostate cancer, she seemed annoyed that I mentioned smoking probably did it. D-E-N-I-A-L.

My bro is in AA. He says that some people actually take their first drink at 6 years old and it becomes an addiction right then, even if they don’t drink again for several years. Yeah, I told him that I like myself after a few drinks. I feel less self-conscious, have more energy and I’ve never thrown up from drinking but I sure don’t like those hangovers.

There are a few places I’d like to visit, France, Italy, Japan, but I really like living in my home state, mainly because my family is here so I don’t see me moving anywhere anytime soon. I need my village, or like David Sedaris says, willage.

Don’t know about the slimey foodstuffs I don’t indulge, but my niece had oysters at a restaurant once and she said they were nothing like the one’s she got from Rocky Point (Mexico). The trick for her was lemon and lots of tabasco.

Sorry this is so long! Just noticed that. Hope it doesn’t cause problems. Please delete it if it does.

-I ate at Applebee’s once. Wasn’t that impressed so I never went back.
-I have no idea. I think that if a smoker had any idea how bad they smell, they wouldn’t smoke. But then again they already know about the cancer, heart attach, and stroke ramifications and are still smoking so I doubt it. Not to mention the price of a pack of cigs!
-My motto on getting totally wasted: I feel too good to feel bad. No hangovers for me thanks. I don’t care for being around anyone that’s drunk either if they are an obnoxious drunk.
-I’ve been to a large part of the country but never overseas. I would like to go but I’m scared to death of flying. Even though I know it’s safer than a car. Just the thought of getting on a plane can make my heart start to pound. I think it’s due to a friend of mine dying in a plane crash.
-Ok this last part brings up a question of my own. Why do you want to learn to like something you don’t like? I’m not much on seafood either. The only thing I’ll eat is fried shrimp.

Here are my answers Shanny :)

~We actually really like AppleBee’s and Lynn loves to go for their mudslides pretty much. But it is convient around here and we don’t like going to Wendy’s and Mickey Dees all the time so AppleBee’s is a great place for us to go as a family. Amber enjoys it alot too.

~People smoke because it helps their nerves. My hubby smokes unfortunately and I keep on him about it especially since my Dad died of lung cancer in 97 from smoking so many years. My Mom does too and well it is just sad all around here.

~I like to drink to get a good buzz going sometimes and almost drunk. It is just a good release to me. But I don’t think I get totally smashed each time and of course this happens once every few months too..lol.

~I would love to travel the world, in fact I hope to in my later years. But I do believe some people are afraid of flying or afraid of leaving the country in fear of terriosts or other things that might happen. I am guessing that is their reason. But I would love to!

~Fry em girl! I will eat almost any of that fried. I love me some shrimp however you fix it. ;)

Hope I helped in your curiousity.. :0) Have a good weekend girlie! Oh btw I took Suki to the vet.

-We eat at Applebee’s at most once a year and when we do, it is when we are out of town visiting family. The D.C. area has way too many wonderful, non-chain restaurants to try and enjoy. We prefer trying something new and unique than standard and common.

-Part of my job is dealing with diseases caused by smoking. From my experience, a lot of people feel that they are invincible and that they could never get sick, especially when they are young and healthy. By the time they realize it can kill them, they are physically and emotionally hooked. It becomes a nervous habit or emotional crutch.

-I have only been drunk a few times since college, mostly because I was with a group of friends and got caught up in having a good time. Wasn’t too pleased with myself afterwards, especially since it wasn’t my intention to drink so much. People that drink to intentionally get drunk I think have a problem. Alcohol is a drug and just like pot or coke, people like the “high” of being drunk.

-I have no idea why people wouldn’t want to see the world. So many beautiful, wonderous things to do and see. Pictures and TV just don’t do them justice. I wish I could quit my job today and just travel for the next 2 years, but I need money to do that. Vicious cycle.

-My husband absolutely hates raw oysters, but he really liked fried oysters when he tried them (in Baltimore at the Brewer’s Art, Lisa!). If you don’t like the texture of raw oysters/clams, I’m afraid there isn’t much you can do to learn to like them. Just try different ways of preparations, like fried clams, clam linguini, oyster stew. You may just not like them at all or you might like them cooked with a batter or sauteed in garlic butter.

    Sorry for the book…
