Jon’s mom is a librarian and her library just turned 4 years old. So on Thursday we went to the library to volunteer at the festivities. Jon put together bubble makers- I overheard a little kid say “Did you hear that? The giant is going to blow bubbles outside!”, so for the rest of the day he was Jon the Giant bubble man. My job was face painting. I brought my paint brushes, qtips, a mirror, glitter, and a little poster I made of simple designs to give the kids suggestions. My line never ended and I painted non-stop all afternoon. Most wanted dragonflies or flowers or rainbows, and the Harry Potter lightning scar was a big hit. The kids were really cute and sweet, but when they were all done they’d just run away. It wasn’t until later that I found out they were running to show their friends. Here I thought I was scaring them or something! One little boy requested a great white shark. I wanted to tell him Dude, I can do a football. How about a football? But I did my best and he ran over to his friends to show off then I painted 4 or 5 more long sardine looking fish that may resemble a great white if you squint.

To my surprise one of the parents asked how much I charge for my services. (!!!) Since it was only my 2nd time EVER painting faces I told her I’d have to check my calendar, but if I’m free in October she wants to book me for a fall festival! I’m famous! My MIL said- now don’t commit, check around and find out how much to charge. To which Jon replied “Yeah, why don’t you ask all your face painting friends how much they charge!”. So, I plan on calling some events planners and clowns, but what sounds reasonable?
