Elderly Mail

So it seems that not only are the people in my family prone to strange accidents resulting in missing body parts, as they get older, they tend to send odd mail.

One year for Christmas my grandmother sent us all Christmas cards printed completely in Spanish. She didn’t even realize it until we told her (after a couple of confused phone calls “Did you get a Spanish Christmas card too?”).

Jon’s grandmother sends cards with tons of free space in them, then sticks tiny post it notes all over the inside covered front and back with her notes. She includes photocopies of articles she saves for us, some dating back to the 1990’s. Then she stuffs everything into an envelope and wraps it completely in clear packing tape. It sometimes requires dynamite and a HazMat team to open her mail.

Another one of our elderly relatives sends the sweetest cards with the oddest things written in them. I just received a get well card in which she wrote: “So sorry to hear you had to have surgery. Hope you’re feeling better now. I went to a friend’s for Easter and ate A LOT. Hi to Jon. Love, Aunt _____”. I love getting cards from her. Everything has quotation marks around it and there are no clear segues from one topic to the next. Her Christmas card this year wished us a joyous holiday then abruptly informed us of her “big Bingo winnings”.

I love these ladies and their mail so much. I make sure to send cards and letters and pictures as often as I can. In fact, I think it’s time I send out some more cards. I’ve got some Bingo losses to report!
