Bridge Ices Before Road
Have you ever not known what something means, but you didn’t know you didn’t know?
Last week we had an ice storm and while driving through it Jon and I came upon a sign that warned: Bridge Ices Before Road. I asked Jon (since he grew up in icy, snowy Minnesota, what exactly that sign meant. He explained that since a bridge has cold air under it and the roads are built on the ground that the bridge would ice up before the road would. And here I’ve always thought it meant “Watch out- that little bit of bridge just before the road ices up!”.
In the shower this morning I thought of another instance where I’d been wrong forever. I used to think that 8 fl. ounces (like on a shampoo bottle etc) meant that there were 8 flowing ounces inside since it’s a liquid. As opposed to fluid which makes much more sense!
And until the internet allowed song lyric lookups, I thought the Eagles sang of the “warm smell of eucalyptus” when in fact it’s the smell of Calita at the Hotel California!
I hope I’m not alone in this…. anyone? anyone? Beuller?
