Sweet skies of Sugarland

Friday night my friend Christina took me to see Sugarland in concert!  Sugarland is one of my very favorite groups so I was really excited!   I normally carry the 5th Avenue Thirty- One purse but for the concert I wanted something I could hold closer to my body.  I am married to Captain Safety Pants after all.  So I pulled out my Organizing Shoulder Bag.  I love this bag because I can wear it cross body and it holds a ton of stuff while staying nice and flat.  Plus, with all the pockets you know just where everything is.  I grabbed the About Town Blanket since we were sitting on the lawn at the concert and we were ready to go!   Loved how the About Town Blanket performed.  I saw tons of people struggling to carry big quilts and blankets.  Me, all I had to do was hold my blanket by the handle.  It unrolled and gave us plenty of blanket to sit on.  The back kept us dry and the fleece top was nice and soft.

Now, back to the concert.  It was awesome!  I hadn’t been to a concert in a million years and I’m so glad I got to go to this one. The opening acts were Canaan Smith and Dave Stewart from the Eurythmics.  Canaan Smith was really fun.  Sugarland came on and I was really impressed with how interactive they were with the crowd.  My favorite moment was when Jennifer Nettles stopped the band during “Baby Girl”.  She noticed this little girl in the crowd singing every word.  So she brought her up on stage and they finished the song together!  It was so sweet!  Christina and I both cried!   It was so great!  I can’t wait for their next album!

Free love songs

Amazon is giving away a dozen or so songs for free.  It’s a Valentine’s Day playlist.  Click here for the freebie tunes!   Lately I’ve been listening to Neon Trees, Tennis, Miranda Lambert, and Jessie James.  I love finding new music for free!  I discovered Tennis when their song Marathon was the free song of the week on iTunes.  Same with Neon Trees.  Their song Animal was free on iTunes a few months ago and I’ve been hooked on them ever since!

Essential Music

My new favorite band is Zach Fowler and the Essentials. My sister Momo introduced me to them when she was dating their bassist.  Normally I would have thought “Oh great, now she’s gonna make me listen to some sub par garage band.”  And actually that is what I thought.  Until I heard their new CD.  They are SO good!  They are kind of a mix between Jason Mraz and Jack Johnson and 311.  I can’t stop listening to them!  Check em out on Facebook (where you can listen to their debut album) and pick up their cd on iTunes!

Click. Ignore.

0*I tried to embed a video from You Tube here but WordPress wouldn’t take the code. Boo. Click here after you read below.

I saw this on Maggie’s blog and knew I had to share it with my peeps.  The video above is for Are you F*cking Kidding Me, (The Facebook Song) by Kate Miller-Heidke.  I love this very much (and I’m not really even into the whole cursing thing).  This is not work safe (if you couldn’t tell by the title) but is totally worth the 3 minutes of your life.  The lyrics are displayed as you watch.  Make sure you watch to the end.  Priceless.

Everyone’s a critic

idol-logoAmerican Idol is coming on tonight.  Just like every other week I will record the episode on the dvr so I can skip commercials and rewind if necessary.  And then I will sit there and judge these people.  I know, I know, thou shalt not judge and glass houses and all.  But I can’t help myself!  Now, I can’t carry a tune in a bucket.  I am tone deaf.  I have no idea what pitch really is.  But every January when Idol rolls around I turn into a music guru.  Why these people don’t listen to me, I don’t know.  It’s almost as if they’ve never even watched the show themselves!  They make the same mistakes every year.  If I could grab a contestant back stage and give them some tips here’s what I’d tell them:

  • Don’t wink, wave, blow kisses, or do any funky movements while you’re singing.  Simon will instantly tell you that your performance is karaoke if you do this.
  • DO NOT sing anything by Celine, Mariah, Michael Jackson, Whitney, Sting, or anyone else iconic.  THEY SING BETTER THAN YOU.  It’s not your fault, it’s just the way it is.  If this were an art competition you wouldn’t try to duplicate the Mona Lisa.
  • Please, for the love of all that is holy, stop with the yeaaahhh yeahs at the end of the song.  I know you have a minute and 20 seconds to knock our socks off and you probably want to fill that time, but I’d take a minute 18 with no yeah yeahs any day.
  • When you choose your outfit for your performance don’t ask a fellow contestant if you look good.  Find a stylist, a friend or a stranger on the street.  This is a competition and your competitors want you to go on stage looking like you robbed a hobo for your clothes because then they will, by default, look better than you.  Just ask Jackie from last week.  Simon was gobsmacked over her shiny pants, giant sneakers, and big red belt as well as her choice of an Elvis song.  And sure enough, she didn’t make the top 12.
  • Do not choose a song that a former Idol winner has released as a single.  You don’t want people comparing you to other Idols.  You want to stand out.  We don’t need 3 more Kelly Clarksons.
  • Listen to Simon.  He knows what he’s talking about.

Whew.  Now that I’ve got that out of my system I’m ready for the next group of singers!  I’ve got my cell phone charged and I’m ready to vote!
