End of Year Adoption Update

imagesDon’t get all excited folks, there’s no breaking news.  I just wanted to let you all know where we stand right now with the adoption.

We are still approved for adoption by the state of NC.  Each month I log on to the websites with photo listings of available children (like http://www.adoptuskids.org) and browse the children listed.  Then I choose some kids who would fit with our family and submit their profiles to our social worker so she can submit our home study to the children’s social workers.  Then we wait for the children’s social workers to approve us or not.  We don’t hear if we are not approved.  It’s a long process.  It’s frustrating too because from month to month I see kids on the sites that we’ve submitted for.  While we wait we go to continuing education classes to keep our foster care license current.  Then we start all over the next month.

Here’s what will happen when we are finally approved: we will start visitation with the child(ren). Their social worker will determine how many visits we’ll need to complete.  Then, once everyone is comfortable with each other we will be able to bring them home!  6 months or so later the adoption will be final.

So that’s it.  That’s what’s going on with us and our never-ending adoption story!

Adoption Update- Halloween 2012

  • Final Adoption Class- Scheduled for November 5.  It’s Med Admin.  Because we will technically be fostering our kids for the 6 months or so that they live with us prior to their adoptions being final we are required to take this class.  It’s the most tedious thing but I understand why they teach it.  Basically if you have to give a Tylenol to a foster kid you need to put on some gloves and follow protocol including documenting the pill in a binder.  Every. Time.
  • Final batch of paperwork- signed, dated, and in an envelope addressed to our social worker, ready to be mailed tomorrow.
  • What’s next??  Once our SW gets our paperwork and we’ve attended the last class then she will give us the go ahead to start picking out some kidlets!   I don’t expect to be matched right away, I’m being realistic.  But I see a really fun Summer 2013 in our future!!!  I’m hoping by then we’ll have been matched, approved, and have completed our pre-placement visits…that means we’ll need to hit up IKEA for some kid beds!

Adoption Update

Home stretch!   We have had all of our home visits and inspections from the fire department, social worker, etc.  We have filled out all of our forms.  We have taken all of our classed.  We are CPR certified.  Right now we are waiting for the state of NC to approve our foster parent fingerprints.  Once those are approved then we have to have our fingerprints taken again.  These will be our adoptive parent fingerprints.  I think it is pretty dang silly that we have to submit 2 separate sets of fingerprints at 2 different times.  I promise we don’t file our prints off.   So now we are at the browsing stage.  We can browse for kidlets online.  It’s so odd to us.  You can browse the children too.  www.heartgalleryofamerica.org  or www.adoptuskids.org  Warning.  It will break your heart.  We want to adopt them all.   It’s so amazing to us that FINALLY we can just about see the finish line!

Adoption Limbo

I get the occasional email and Facebook message from people wondering how the adoption is going.  Well, up til about a month ago it was going pretty well.  Our social worker came to visit and do our individual interviews last month and it went great.  But we have had some more speed bumps.  We are still working on the next steps I blogged about, but in the mean time we are dealing with some issues.   Long story so get comfy.  Continue reading “Adoption Limbo”
