End of Year Adoption Update

imagesDon’t get all excited folks, there’s no breaking news.  I just wanted to let you all know where we stand right now with the adoption.

We are still approved for adoption by the state of NC.  Each month I log on to the websites with photo listings of available children (like http://www.adoptuskids.org) and browse the children listed.  Then I choose some kids who would fit with our family and submit their profiles to our social worker so she can submit our home study to the children’s social workers.  Then we wait for the children’s social workers to approve us or not.  We don’t hear if we are not approved.  It’s a long process.  It’s frustrating too because from month to month I see kids on the sites that we’ve submitted for.  While we wait we go to continuing education classes to keep our foster care license current.  Then we start all over the next month.

Here’s what will happen when we are finally approved: we will start visitation with the child(ren). Their social worker will determine how many visits we’ll need to complete.  Then, once everyone is comfortable with each other we will be able to bring them home!  6 months or so later the adoption will be final.

So that’s it.  That’s what’s going on with us and our never-ending adoption story!

Like Mary Poppins, but without the singing

I’m a working girl again!  Well, sort of.  My friend Shannon gave birth to a baby girl in May.  She’s transitioning back into work by going part time right now.  So I’m taking care of the baby on days when Shannon’s working.   Baby Colleen is super cute and super sweet and pretty low key.  Newborns don’t do much other than eat, poop, and sleep, but she’s starting to smile more and that’s really sweet!

Shower Games

For Shannon G’s shower I wanted to find some fun shower games.  She was not into the whole “let’s measure the Mommy’s belly” thing or the melted candy bars in diaper game (thank goodness- that just seems gross to me!).  So I looked around online and found the Don’t Say Baby Game.  As guests arrived I gave them all a hot pink Mardi Gras bead necklace to wear.  Once everyone arrived I explained the rules of the game.  You can’t say “Baby”.  If you do and are caught then you give up your beads to the person who caught you.  The guest at the end of the shower with the most beads wins a fabulous prize.  I was the first person to lose my beads when I called Kiki “Baby”.  Doh!  It was really fun, especially because we all got a little competitive and MAN is it hard to not say baby at a baby shower!

The other game we played was baby pictionary.  I borrowed a giant dry erase board from Gigi that’s on an easel.  That made it super easy to play.  Susan brought some dry erase markers for us.  A few weeks prior to the shower I compiled the list of word clues for the game.  I came up with a few on my own but then turned to Google.  You would not believe what some people suggested!  Pablum?  Dilation?  Crowning?  Ok, I don’t even know what pablum is but it doesn’t sound good.  And I sure did not want a bunch of ladies trying to draw a baby’s head crowning or any other anatomy class pictures!   I finally came up with a good list:  Continue reading “Shower Games”

Space kidet Em

Yesterday I went to Shannon’s daughter Emily’s 4th birthday.  Em is one of my favorite little people in the world.  I just adore her.  I can’t believe she’s 4 already!  Seems like just yesterday she came home from China.  Anyway, the kids bounced around at Space Kidets then we went back to Shan’s for pizza and presents. When it was time to open presents someone said “You can go ahead Emily and open a present.”  She responded “No, I have to wait for someone to get the camera”!  What a little ham!  Look at that sweet face!  Here’s Shannon trying out Em’s magic Tiana wand I got her (Shan’s cooking up a baby sister for Em that should arrive in the next couple months)!

Shower the people you love with love

I’m throwing my first baby shower in March!  It’s for Shannon G who’s married to Mustachio.  Naturally it’s a mustache themed baby shower!  I have lots of fun ideas but can always use more.

  • What are some fun baby shower games?  Besides “measure the Mommy”.  That one gets a big no.
  • What should I stay away from?
  • Good baby shower foods?

I’m so excited!  I’ve already been planning this for months!  And there’s nothing cuter than a baby with a rockin’ stache!
